Case study 41: 75 year old female with a history of rheumatoid arthritis that presents with difficulty walking and balance troubles over the past year. She endorses neck pain and has had multiple neck surgeries. Diagnosis: Cervical Pannus Physical exams findings show upper motor neuron involvement (spinal compression). Treatment is spinal fusion with decompression. This is related to rheumatoid arthritis. The development of an inflammatory mass or pannus in the craniocervical junction due to an atlanto-axial instability is a well-known condition. Due to the chronic instability and the mass effect on the spinal cord, they can produce severe myelopathy. Pannus is most frequently associated with rheumatoid arthritis, although it can also be seen in other conditions in which a chronic atlanto-axial instability exists such as degenerative anthropathies, os odontoideum or posttraumatic pseudoarthrosis of the odontoid process. #casestudy #neurosurgery #spinalmyelopothy #cervicalpannus #ladyspinedoc #spinesurgery #cervicalspine #arthritis #rheumatoidarthritis #healthcare #neurosurgeon #medschool #paschool #nursingschool #nursing #medstudent #pastudent
