Over a century ago, a mysterious advertisement is placed in the Dutch newspapers. It’s just the word: 'hagelslag', meaning something like 'a downpour of hail.' It turns out to be a word made up by a Dutch liquorice factory for their latest product: aniseeds covered in sugar, to be eaten on a slice of bread. Delicious, white granules with the sweet taste of aniseed. Hmmm... Five years later, CHOCOLATE hagelslag is introduced. And what happens when aniseed goes head to head with chocolate? Chocolate wins, of course. Original hagelslag becomes anijshagel and chocolate sprinkles become 'regular' hagelslag. Although the Belgians like to call them mouse turds. Presumably so you won't eat too much of them. Chocolate sprinkles are not made by mice, but by a machine that creates long, thin strands of chocolate from cacao, milk powder and sugar. The strands are chilled and chopped, and a sugar coating makes them shiny and sweet. The prediction for every Dutch breakfast table has since been: expect hail!
