(Pt.1) A new base and motor for the Sherline micro lathe

I found the Sherline lathe to be a great little machine but one of the things I hate about it is the position the motor is mounted. The motor is mounted high up on the back and protrudes out to the left of the machine. This has many drawbacks such as making the lathe excessively long and it also makes it incredibly unbalanced to the point that it is practically unusable unless it is bolted down to a work bench. Bolting the lathe to a work bench aides rigidity but means the lathe is not portable. I wanted the lathe to be portable, compact and maneuverable so I needed to make some changes. The original motor for this lathe also happens to be faulty, so I took the opportunity to upgrade the 60w motor to a 200w motor. Though this project is being built for a Sherline lathe it could easily be adapted to suit other small lathes such as an EMCO Unimat or Cowells lathe.
