Ficus carica Bijela smokva Petrovača These figs grow in continental Croatia, USDA zone 7. The fruits typically ripen at the end of June or early July. This variety is locally called "Petrovača" as the fruits ripen around St. Peter's Day (June 29). Unfortunately, my larger fig tree dropped its fruit before it was ripe due to unfavorable weather. This fig tree variety can be pruned twice a year: in late winter/early spring and in early to mid-summer. The winter pruning is more extensive and entails removing any dead and lanky branches, the branches that are touching, thinning out the tree, and shaping it to ensure better productivity and control the height. Summer pruning is usually very light in nature. Once the shoots have five leaves, you pinch off the tips to encourage branching and help shape the tree. I decided to do a harder prune before mid-summer to control the size and shape of the tree, before it formed new buds (embryonic fruitlets) that will become fruit next spring. #figtreepruning
