Wide of streets with demonstrators and police, pull out to wider shot STORYLINE: Protesters have clashed with riot police on the opening day of the European Economic Summit in Salzburg, Austria. Anti-globalisation demonstrators threw stones and hit out at police with sticks, but no serious incidents were reported and only three people were briefly detained by police. Riot police in full body armour were out in force and outnumbered the crowd of several hundred protesters who roamed the streets carrying communist hammer-and-sickle flags and chanting "Our world is not for sale, put the bankers into jail!" Hundreds of protesters gathered at the local communist party headquarters before pulling hoods over their heads and marching on the city's main train station for a scheduled rally to mark the summit's opening. They then advanced on the conference centre where the summit was being held, but police surrounded them on three sides and blocked their progress. Small groups of protestors sporadically tried unsuccessfully to break through the barriers. Police had earlier sealed off the centre with rings of barriers that turned the medieval alpine tourist destination into a fortified maze of checkpoints. The protests came as the continent's top economic and political leaders converged on Salzburg for the summit. There were extra precautions after street fighting left 70 people injured last month at the European Union summit in Goteborg, Sweden. Similar riots injured 32 people at an anti-World Bank rally last weekend in Barcelona, Spain. Local media reports estimated that nearly 5-thousand police were put on duty in an effort to prevent any violence from erupting. The European Economic Summit brings together the region's political, economic and business leaders to discuss such topics as E-U enlargement, the Balkans and Russia's relationship with the rest of Europe.
