But the story of the SP-1200 actually starts decades earlier, with synth designer Dave Rossum and a small company in California experimenting with modular synthesizers, polyphonic chips and early samplers. In this short documentary, we trace the full journey from the Moog Model 12 and the Fairlight CMI through the Emulator, SP-12 and finally the SP-1200, exploring how technical limitations like 12-bit sampling, tiny memory and creative workarounds helped define the gritty sound of hip-hop. Using archive interviews and stories from producers who used the machine, we break down how this unlikely instrument became one of the most important tools in music. ⏰ TIMESTAMPS 00:00 - Intro 00:36 - Santa Cruz Synth Club 03:16 - The $35000 Problem 06:20 - 12 Bits of Grit 09:18 - A Quick Interlude 10:18 - The Golden Age 13:26 - Ten Seconds Forever 👉 Sources: Art + Music + Technology Podcast W/ Dave Rossum - https://open.spotify.com/episode/6a6K...
