A few days ago, a former Ugandan police officer, Afande Mugabe, released a video in which he explained the challenges faced by officers within the Uganda Police Force. He highlighted issues such as low salaries, poor accommodation, and lack of respect from senior officers. The video attracted widespread attention, including from National Unity Platform (NUP) President Bobi Wine, who, during his 2021 presidential campaign and again recently, promised that if elected president, the minimum salary for police officers would be one million shillings. Mugabe, popularly known as “Jungle Man,” has since relocated to the United Kingdom, where he says his life has significantly improved. I had the opportunity to interview him, and this is his story.
