Wide of militants standing on roof STORYLINE: Militants from the Islamic Jihad organisation in Gaza on Friday performed a military show in Gaza city in front of hundreds of supporters. The parade was meant as a show of force as the shaky truce between Israel and military factions in the Gaza strip reaches its expiry date. A six-month truce between Israel and Gaza's Hamas rulers is set to expire on Friday. Hamas officials said on Thursday they would not renew the arrangement. Israel says the truce has no expiry date and it will not take military action if Gaza's armed groups hold their fire. The cease-fire has been marred by ongoing violence since early November. Though violence and casualties dropped significantly during the ceasefire, neither side was satisfied. Hamas complained that Israel never fully opened its border crossings to let vital cargo in and exports out, while Israel charged that Hamas used the time to replenish its arsenal with arms smuggled in through dozens of tunnels under the Egyptian border. The ceasefire began to unravel over the past month after Israel launched a deadly attack on November 4 killing six Hamas gunmen. The Israeli army claimed at the time that it had uncovered a tunnel intended for immediate use to abduct Israeli soldiers into the Gaza Strip. Palestinian militants have since fired numerous rockets and mortar shells at Israel and the Israeli army has carried out airstrikes and ground operations in Gaza. During the parade on Friday that included songs and chanting slogans, Islamic Jihad loyalists set ablaze an effigy of Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and of US President George W. Bush. Abu Yousif from the Popular Resistance Committee, an ally of the Islamic Hamas militant group that rules Gaza, called on all Palestinian groups in Gaza to "declare a state of general military alarm on the home borders." Abu Haroon said the group would not leave the people of the Gaza Strip "in the face of the Zionist attacks and invasions".
