Food dehydration is an effective and fun way to reduce waste, save money, go green, and practice preparedness! Dehydrated food lasts for years when stored properly, is lightweight, and doesn't require electricity to preserve. In this video, you will learn how to dehydrate apples! Dehydrated apple chips make a great on-the-go snack and can be stored for years if vacuum packed, and up to a year in a mason jar. Never throw out over-ripened apples again! They are surprisingly filling, and have 85-90% fewer calories than gummy bears. All apples are great to eat “as is” as a tasty on the go snack, but they are also fantastic for baking! Apple pie with dehydrated apples is fantastic: it will rehydrate to a less soggy and more crisp apple compared to those in traditional apple pie. We prefer apple pie made with dehydrated apples over fresh apples for this reason! One exception is that “red delicious” apples are generally not as good for baking. They will last many years if stored properly. Store in a jar with an oxygen pack, or vacuum-sealed bag. Keep out of direct sunlight. *INSTRUCTIONS* 1. Horizontally slice to 1/8 inch slices or 1/4×1/4 or 1/2×1/2 inch cubes, or use an apple peeler like in this video! 2. Spread on a dehydrator tray and coat evenly with a moderate amount of lemon juice. For ease, use a lemon juice bottle with a spray cap. 3. Dehydrate at 125 degrees Fahrenheit for 10-16 hours. 4. Store in a Mason jar with an oxygen pack or seal in a vacuum and Mylar bag for later use in recipes, or eat as is! *DRYNESS CHECK* A properly dehydrated apple chip will feel dry and not sticky to the touch. They will also be somewhat malleable and can be torn or broken in half. Apple cubes will feel dry to the touch and not sticky and will be chewy. If yours do not feel this way, just put them back in the dehydrator for a few more hours! We love to help you dehydrate, store, and build your pantries!
