From giant snakes and rats, to monsterous crocodiles and Megalodon … Here are 20 prehistoric animals you’ll be happy are extinct Subscribe to Epic Wildlife http://goo.gl/6rzs5u Let's Connect -- http://www.epicadamwildlife.com/ -- / epicadamwildlife -- / epicwildlife -- http://gplus.to/epicwildlife #10 Helicoprion (hel-uh-KOP-ree-un) These shark like fish sound like they could have had their own horror movie. They had a bizarre ‘tooth whorl’ that measured up to 24 inches long (61 cm) and looked like a circular saw in their mouth. The creature may have used its pliable jaw as a weapon. Or it may have used it to capture prey by whipping it into schools of fish. Then it would feed on whatever was trapped and reeled back in. Experts think the beast went nearly 40 feet long (12 m). They were around in great numbers some 290 million years ago. Even that seems too close for comfort.. #9 Dunkleosteus At more than 20 feet long (6 m), heavily armored, and weighing nearly 2,000 pounds (907 kg), this monster fish would have caught YOU, not the other way around. This beast was a hypercarnivorous apex predator but it didn’t have teeth. Instead, there were plates in its mouth that formed a beak, which could exert a devastating bite force on its victims. #8 Smilodon You probably know this one better as the Sabre Toothed Cat, and they’re among the most famous of prehistoric creatures. Their trademark elongated upper canine teeth measured around 7 inches long (18 cm), and extended from the animal’s mouth even when closed. While those bladelike choppers were formidable weapons, they were actually fragile and could not bite into bone. Three species of this animal have been identified, with the largest of the lot weighing around 900 pounds (400 kg) and standing nearly 4 feet high (120 cm). They died out around 10,000 years ago, but it’s still unknown why. #7 Titanoboa Most sources cite the reticulated python as the world’s longest extant snake, with lengths exceeding 20 feet (6.4 m). But 60 million years ago in Colombia, there was a massive constrictor snake that measured some 42 feet long (13 m) and weighed a staggering 2,500 pounds (1,134 kg). Titanoboa ranks as the largest snake ever documented, and would have preyed on the huge crocodiles it coexisted with in the ancient rainforests. Those reticulated pythons don’t seem so big now, do they? #6 You Would’ve Needed A Bigger Boat Most sources tend to estimate the length of the legendary Megalodon at around 60 feet long (18 m) and weighing 130,000 pounds (59 metric tons). That’s too big to argue about. With a shark that goes longer than a school bus it’s easy to understand why Megalodon has resonated through the ages and might be most familiar name on our list. Did you know that while the beast is often depicted as a gigantic version of a great white shark, many experts say Megalodon probably had a greater resemblance to today’s sand tiger shark. #5 Paraceratherium This huge animal was an ancestor of today’s rhinos. But this prehistoric species didn’t have a horn. They had tusklike incisors and pillar-like legs, which makes them sound like elephants. Yet these beasts were larger than elephants. Fossil evidence suggests that these creatures would have measured over 24 feet long (7 m) and weighed an incredible 44,000 pounds (20,000 kg)! #4 Giant Short-Faced Bear These creatures inhabited South America after migrating from North America, where some of their cousins remained up to 11,000 years ago. The South American variety is thought to have been the biggest and most powerful carnivore on land in its time. They existed up to around 500,000 years ago and would have stood at least 11 feet tall upright (3.4 m) while weighing some 3,500 pounds (1,588 kg). Even if they weren’t smarter than the average bear they were definitely larger! #3 Palaeoloxodon The Asian Straight Tusked Elephant ranged from present-day India to Japan. Analysis of their fossils indicates the creature stood more than 17 feet tall (5 m), and would have weighed more than 48,000 pounds (22 metric tons)! That would make this prehistoric pachyderm the largest land mammal known to date! #2 Livyatan Melvillei This immense creature was named in part for Leviathan, the huge sea monster from the Bible. The second part of its name is a tribute to Herman Melville, the author of Moby Dick. Those are great namesakes because this beast was a marine mammal that went about 60 feet long (18 m) and was comparable in size to the modern day sperm whale. Not counting tusks they had the largest teeth of any known animal, measuring about 14 inches long (36 cm). Since they existed during the same period, many experts think that this sea monster may have clashed with Megalodon over food sources. Who would have won that contest? 1...
