Join us as we continue our Antarctica adventure on a thrilling voyage to one of the most remote and storied destinations on the planet: Elephant Island. Our day starts shrouded in mist, as we cruise the Southern Ocean with every mile our anticipation builds knowing we are following in the wake of legendary explorers. En route the Celebrity Eclipse picks its way through floating ice until it finally chances on and cruises between two epic icebergs with their rich turquoise colours, flat tops and wind sculptured tunnels. We spend our time outside taking it all in and watching for whales and other fauna. The arrival at Elephant Island is a momentous occasion. This rugged and windswept island is etched in history as the refuge for Sir Ernest Shackleton’s crew during their perilous Antarctic expedition. As we approach we are struck by the sheer isolation, cold conditions, starkness and harsh reality of this brutal beauty. It truly is a symbol of human endurance and the unyielding spirit of exploration. It continues to capture the imagination of those fascinated by the extremes of our planet From our enrichment talks we are looking at a largely untouched landscape which makes it unique and a valuable site for scientific research. Yet, and despite the cold, neither of us could step inside as we both felt that we would never see this awesome sight again. So we stayed out either on the deck or the balcony taking it all in until the ship finally departed. We made a bucket list of places we wanted to visit and Joanne's choice was Antarctica it is a continent that she has always wanted to see but no way was she ever going to go in a zodiac so when we found a scenic Antartica cruise we just had to go. So we booked a cruise with Celebrity Cruises adding on some hotel days at the start and end of the holiday to explore Buenos Aires. Neither of us have been to the places on this itinerary previously. This cruise now means that we have finally visited every continent. So on this adventure we explore on our own and we also take ship excursions to maximise our time and experience.
