Weed whacking. Now that’s a workout! But weed workouts are also a thing. Marijuana users who incorporate weed before or after their workouts tend to exercise more. That’s the gist of a new study out of the University of Colorado-Boulder. Researchers surveyed 600 marijuana users in California, Colorado, Nevada, Oregon and Washington. In states where it’s legal, 8 in 10 marijuana users say they take the drug shortly before or after exercise. But 67% couldn’t get enough and said they did it before and after working out. Folks who used cannabis with exercise got about 43 minutes more exercise per week than those who didn’t. Seventy percent said mixing marijuana with their workouts made them enjoy exercise more, 78% said it helped with recovery, and just over half said it increased motivation. Talk about a runner’s high! But before we get to the finish line, it’s important to point out that only 38% said it boosted performance. Researchers say cannabis could help with recovery because of its anti-inflammatory properties. And let’s face it, working out hurts as we get older, and motivation can die off. These researchers aren’t endorsing marijuana as something to add-on to exercise programs, but they aren’t convinced it’s harmful, either. Just be smart. If it’s illegal to drive under the influence of marijuana, do you really want to be operating heavy machinery? You don’t want your weight-lifting days to go up in smoke!
