The Abandoned Manitoba 3 video series by Graham Street, Shaun Cameron, and Gordon Goldsborough visits ghost towns, vacant buildings, and other historic sites from Manitoba's past. Join us as we explore back roads to places that tell great stories about how things used to be, and how we have ended up where we are today. In this video, we visit sites connected with commercial uses of the Red River, starting with the fur trade and 19th-century steamboats such as the Anson Northup. We move north to view the remains of the former Bergen Cutoff Bridge. First used in 1914, it was intended to reroute railway traffic around the City of Winnipeg. When it was abandoned. the bridge's pivot section (intended to allow ships to pass under the bridge) was permanently frozen in the open position. From there, we go to the historic St. Andrews Camere Curtain Dam at Lockport and its associated lock, the only one on the prairies. A short distance north, we arrive at the Marine Museum of Manitoba and explore the MS Keenora, a ship that once carried cargo and passengers all around Lake Winnipeg. We end our journey in the Selkirk Slough where we kayak around the rusting hulk of the River Rouge and talk with historian Bill Redekop about the glory days of the Red River cruise ships.
