Let's talk about rekordbox If you haven't heard of rekordbox, you probably only use vinyl. Rekordbox is the software companion to Pioneer's successful line of DJ equipment. Allowing users to analyze and prepare their tracks for use on Pioneer gear. Recently Pioneer launched Rekordbox 4, which in addition to it's previous application also became a full DJ mixing software with DVS support. And yes, it has a sync button. So here's a few thoughts about the new Rekordbox and the implications it has for digital DJS. 1. Pioneer is forcing their product on digital DJs Now it is true that with a controller, you can still DJ with whatever software suites you. However, most of the DJ booths I've played in, have not had ample room to accommodate a controller because they are home to 2 Pioneer CDJs and a Pioneer mixer. Of course only the nexus 2000 2 line has dropped native support for serato, but this indicates the company's leaning toward their Rekordbox software. 2. It doesn't have any outstanding features over other DJ software Excluding the fact that preparing your tracks in Rekordbox makes them generally universal for playing out. However as a DJ software, Rekordbox doesn't offer anything revolutionary or groundbreaking that it's competition doesn't. There's nothing about the software that makes me want to go spend the money purchasing a license for it, other than my opinion that it's going to render my current software obsolete. 3. It may lead to amazing innovations in DJ software Since Pioneer will likely edge their competition out by virtue of essential monopoly, we may very well see some interesting and highly useful developments in DJ software from either Pioneer themselves or their competition. However I don't think Pioneer will want to support their competition, so the amount of support CDJs and DJMs have for third party software may decrease, or disappear totally, as seen on the nexus 2000 2 line. Overall it's hard to predict the full impact this will have on digital DJing, but I think it's safe to assume that Pioneer is signaling the end of support for third party software, so it may be time to consider at least trying Rekordbox, if not switching totally. However we may see some great advancements from Serato and Traktor, if not other DJ software which may build a big name by offering some never before seen feature.
