Silt is mostly seen as slimy and repelling. But if we look at it closely, it turns out to be infinitely rich and complex! This clay-like material gathers alone all the conditions necessary for the creation and proliferation of living matter, both plants and animals. It all began 4 billion years ago, with the appearance of the most ingenuous micro-organisms… We leave for the coasts of French Guiana, home to some of the world’s richest mudflats. There, an astonishing food chain unfolds, from unicellular algae producing the fuel of life - carbohydrates - up to South America’s most efficient and fearsome predator, the jaguar, via a wide range of birds. Red ibises, snowy egrets, tricolored herons… They are thousands to thrive here: to each species its own strategy to feed. Some plants, too, demonstrate amazing tactics by forming mangroves that are more vital than ever to the preservation of our ecosystem. To the rhythm of tides and days, we carefully observe the life that thrives within these incredible mudflats. Cleverly oscillating between splendid aerial shots and microscope sequences, this documentary sheds light on this unknown yet fascinating ecosystem.
