It's one of Illinois' most competitive races this primary season: a rare open seat to represent Chicago's North Side and suburban north shore all the way west out to Cary and Algonquin. Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky’s retirement after 14 terms paved the way for this super competitive Democratic primary. Out of 15 candidates, a top tier has emerged based on fundraising and polling. Two of the frontrunners, State Senator Laura Fine and Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss, are Jewish, and divisions among Democrats over U.S. support for Israel are in the spotlight. A dark money super PAC called Elect Chicago Women is spending heavily in support of Fine. The group is reportedly backed by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC). Some of AIPAC’s top backers have been major donors to President Donald Trump. Two more state lawmakers, a former FBI agent and a Gen Z influencer who has raised more than $3 million round out the top five candidates. --- 'The Point' airs on WGN and streams on WGN+ each weeknight at 6:45 p.m. CT Airdate: February 9, 2026 | Episode 11
