"Watchman, Tell us of the Night"--arranged by Mary Christian

This duet is an arrangement of the Advent hymn "Watchman, Tell us of the Night" ("Aberystwyth," by Joseph Parry). It begins with a series of repeated piano chords, like a clock tolling midnight. In the first verse, the piano and organ pass the melody back and forth, dramatizing the conversation between the weary traveler and the watchman who points out the star that heralds the "promised day." In subsequent verses, the intensity builds as Parry's hymn tune is intertwined with phrases from Handel's Messiah, announcing that even when "Darkness shall cover the Earth," a "Great Light" still shines. Performed by Ted Babbitt on organ, Mary Christian on piano.
