The MINISTRY OF HELL is a very fitting title for our epic tramp that is covered in this video. Join us through the remote and rugged beauty of Kahurangi National Park to the seldom visited Ministry of Works Hut and then to the even lesser tramped bush clad section through to the Kahurangi Lighthouse Keepers Hut. The breakdown of the tramp is as follows: Day 1: We left a car at the Anatori River car park (Golden Bay, New Zealand) and then drove a second car back to the start of the Heaphy Track near Collingwood. We then tramped the Heaphy Track past Brown Hut, Aorere Shelter, Lookout Point, and stayed the first night at Perry Saddle Hut. Approx 4-5 hours. Day 2: Kev and Warren made an early start to the day by tramping up Mt Perry to capture the sunrise before the whole group then continuing along the Heaphy. We visited the splendid Gouland Downs Hut and the nearby caves which are well worth a small 5 minute side trip. From there we continued past Saxon Hut and along the track until we reached Blue Shirt Creek. At Blue Shirt Creek Bridge Number 1, we then left the Heaphy track and tramped untracked to the north up the Blue Shirt Creek valley. We took our time and carefully navigated the spectacular scenery and rock formations in the area before a final push up a tussock clad valley to reach the Ministry of Works hut. Approx 7-8 hours. Day 3: The third day over Saxon Ridge involved an untracked bush bash through over 8km of thick west coast bush. Words cannot capture what a day like this does to you as a tramper. It was an immensely taxing and long day that took us over 14 hours and tested all of our physical and mental resolve. Even then we didn’t quite make it all the way through and had to camp out so that gives a pretty good idea of how tough this part of the tramp was. With that said, it is a truly special spot on New Zealand’s wild northwest coast of the Upper South Island and we are better for the experience. Approx 14.5 hours Day 4: From our camping spot in the bush, we continued to follow a trapping line where we eventually (and reluctantly) climbed up to our exit point from the bush and onto the magnificent sand dunes approximately 500m south of the Kahurangi Keepers House Hut. We descended the dunes back down into the final reaches of Camp Stream which had now widened to become a flat and stunning tropical setting which saw us safely out and arriving at the Kahurangi Keepers House. After exploring the wonderful hut and surrounding beach, we then headed off along the coastal section spending time on both an inland 4WD track and out on the beach depending on where the tide would permit us to walk. The tide was just low enough to enable a pack float swim across Big River (would recommend a fully low tide crossing if you can time it right) along with a waist high crossing at the Anaweka River. The final part of our journey had us walking the rather tedious section of Cowin Road before reaching our car back at the Anatori River car park. Approx 6 hours. A true tramp for the bucket list and one full of raw natural beauty and adventure. Disclaimer: 1. TAKE EQUIPMENT FOR ALL CONDITIONS INCL EMERGENCY SHELTER FOR THE NIGHT 2.
