Composer: Albin Rickman Performers: UBC Symphonic Wind Ensemble Conductor: Dr. Robert Taylor ''Ödemarken'' is a Swedish word for unpopulated wasteland. The piece is a celebration of nature beyond the human civilisation. It is inspired from the excursions I've had the fortune to do throughout the desolate forests and mountains deep inside British Columbia. The piece resembles both the beauty and tenderness of the landscape as well as the destructive powers that brings heat-waves, floods and shivering cold. Olivier Messiaen's octatonic scale of the second mode is used extensively in the modal sections of letter C and H. The Scale is an eight-note scale which rises by semitone, tone, semitone etc. In Jazz, the same scale is called the Diminished scale as it consists of two interlocking diminished seventh chords. Instrumentation: Piccolo 2 Flutes Oboe 1 English Horn/Oboe 2 3 Clarinets in B-flat Soprano Saxophone Alto Saxophone Tenor Saxophone Baritone Saxophone 2 Bassoons Trumpet 1 in C (also available in B-flat) 2 Trumpets in B-flat 4 Horns in F 2 Tenor Trombones 1 Bass Trombone 1 Euphonium 2 Tuba Timpani Harp Piano Percussion 1 (Snare Drum, Maracas) Percussion 2 (Glockenspiel, Triangle, Maracas, Marimba, Claves) Percussion 3 (Mark tree, Claves, Suspended Cymbal/Foot Bass drum, Glockenspiel, Tambourine)
