What are signs and symptoms of prostate cancer, plus what happens when you go see your doctor to get your prostate checked? In this video Dr O'Donovan (MBBS, PhD) asks members of the public if they know the answers to these important questions and provides the answers. What is the prostate? The prostate is a small gland found only in men and trans women. It surrounds the tube that carries urine out of the body (urethra). What does it do? The prostate gland produces a thick, white fluid that gets mixed with sperm to create semen.The prostate gland is about the size and shape of a walnut but tends to get bigger as you get older. Potential signs and symptoms of prostate cancer: If you have any of the following symptoms, see your doctor: difficulty starting or stopping urinating a weak flow of urine straining when peeing feeling like you're not able to fully empty your bladder prolonged dribbling after you've finished peeing needing to pee more frequently or more suddenly waking up frequently during the night to pee Signs that the cancer may have spread include bone and back pain, a loss of appetite, pain in the testicles and unintentional weight loss. See your GP if you notice any problems with, or changes to, your usual pattern of urination. These may not necessarily indicate prostate cancer, but it's important to get it checked. *Important notice: Because Black men have double the risk of prostate cancer and develop it younger, it's strongly recommend they talk to their GP (doctor) about a regular PSA blood test from the age of 45.
