Cuffed tracheostomy tubes are usually used with mechanically vented patients. The “cuff”, or balloon, closes the rest of the airway to create a closed system between the ventilator and the lungs. Uncuffed tracheostomy tubes let air move around the tube and through the tube. These patients are usually breathing without a ventilator.
