Paint a Vibrant Floral and Collage on a Black Background

Paint along with me to create a vibrant floral and collage on against a black india ink background. (And excuse my voice as I work through this cold). Welcome to Day 13 of the 28 Days of Play. Today’s playful prompt is to choose a color you normally resist. For me, that color is black. Period. I dislike black so much that I don’t even keep a tube of it in my studio. So instead, I started with India ink. I chose it intentionally because it’s waterproof, and that meant I could work from dark to light— the opposite of how I normally paint. Usually, I begin with lighter values, slowly building toward darker ones, and then circling back again. This time, I knew I’d be starting in unfamiliar territory. I also knew it would be a challenge—because black is my least favorite color, and it’s not a color that naturally appears in nature. Even my darkest values are usually color mixes, Prussian blue, or Payne’s gray but never black. But I was up for the challenge. I reminded myself that black almost always needs to be paired with vibrant color to feel alive. So I instantly thought back to an extra scrap of collage paper I had left over from Day 10. That scrap became my base and my creative starting point. If you’re joining me today, notice what comes up when you choose a color you usually avoid. There’s no need to like it. Just stay curious.
