The earliest existing score is found in Wang Zhi's "Xilutang Qintong" from the Ming Dynasty. It is divided into 10 sections, with some sections accompanied by Sima Xiangru's original lyrics. The most widely circulated version is found in "Meian Qinpu" from the Qing Dynasty. The lyrics are derived from "Xixiang Ji" from the Yuan Dynasty. The guqin scores of this piece are rich in records from various dynasties: "Taihe Zhengyinpu" from the Ming Dynasty briefly describes the background of its creation; "Zhenchuan Zhengzong Qinpu" details the story of Zhuo Wenjun eloping after hearing the music and includes a version with improved fingering; and the postscript of "Hanguzhai Qinpu" praises its melodies as exquisite. The scores differ in mode (such as Wumei mode and Linzhong mode), section division, and the source of the lyrics, reflecting the evolution of the guqin piece in its transmission. The guqin song incorporates metaphor and allegory, using the image of the phoenix to express feelings. Sima Xiangru once played it on the Luqi guqin, and Zhuo Wenjun fell in love with it after hearing the music.
