In 1941, during World War II, the British cargo ship SS Gairsoppa was torpedoed by a German U-boat and sank into the depths of the North Atlantic. On board was an extraordinary cargo — nearly 2000 tons of silver bullion. For more than 70 years, the treasure remained buried nearly 4,700 meters (15,400 feet) beneath the ocean surface. It wasn’t until 2011 that a deep-sea recovery mission led by Odyssey Marine Exploration successfully located and recovered over 110 tons of silver, making it one of the largest precious metal salvage operations in history.
