Discover the Untold Secrets of London's Temple Bar

Hidden in the shadow of St Paul's Cathdral is another Wren masterpiece, Temple Bar. The last remaining gate into the City. This was a ceremonial gate between the City of London and Westminster, the two chief residences of the medieval English monarchs. During the 18th century, traitors were hung, drawn and quartered. Their remains were often boiled and tarred before being mounted on spikes above Temple Bar, where they remained until they rotted & fell off. One such soul was Sir Thomas Armstrong, for the Rye House Plot of 1683 which planned to assassinate Charles II and his brother and heir James II. Another was Christopher Layer executed for high treason in 1723 for his part in what became known as the Atterbury Plot. His head remained on top of the Bar for 30 years!
