I, Being Born a Woman and Distressed by Edna St. Vincent Millay. About the poet : Edna St. Vincent millay was born on 22nd February 1892 in Rockland, Maine ,United States of America . Edna was an American lyrical poet and playwright. She even won the poetry prices from an early age including pulitzer prize in 1923 ,and she went on to use verse as a medium for her feminist activism. She was best known for her poem "Renaissance" . She wrote some of the best sonnets of the century. She was one of the most respected American poets of 20th century . She was known for her riveting readings and feminist views. She won the pulitzer prize for her book "The Ballad of the Harp weaver ". Edna died on 19th October 1958 in Austerlitz ,New York. I being born a woman and distressed, is a 14 line Sonnet . It is written in Petrarchean Sonnet. The title of this poem is drawn from the first line of the poem, because Millay doesn't give any title for this work. This work introduces new perspective on concepts such as Gender, sexuality ,lust,intimacy and human relationship. Inthis poem, it also explores the feelings of a woman as a lover . She even break many societal expectations surrounding the role of a woman at a particular time . There is a frank portrayal of lust and women's equality in the poem .Poet uses first person narration in the poem. in this poem Millay, separates lust from rationality and even affection.
