Jerí had been serving as interim president after Congress removed former President Dina Boluarte from office on Oct. 10, 2025. "Politically, we are in very bad shape. No one represents us. So we hope that the next elections are serious,” said 67-year-old Peruvian José Santos on Wednesday, next to a kiosk in Lima with newspapers' headlines reporting on the latest political crisis. Lawmakers approved censuring Jerí by a vote of 75-24, with three abstentions. Congress ousted Jerí, deepening the country's turmoil in a country that has seen seven presidents since 2016, and is about to hold a general election in April amid widespread public outcry over the surge in violent crime. Congress is expected to select a replacement from its own ranks on Wednesday. Jerí took office after lawmakers removed Boluarte in October. Prosecutors have opened a preliminary investigation into alleged corruption and influence peddling related to undisclosed meetings with two Chinese businessmen in December. Jerí has denied wrongdoing. Peru's constitution allows Congress to remove a president for “moral incapacity."
