Over the next decade, Dame Greville had them refined and extended twice — first in 1922 with 12 additional diamonds, then again in 1929 with another 10. Cartier’s artisans combined various diamond shapes — pear, baguette, baton, emerald, trapeze, and more — into a cascading chandelier form all in platinum settings. The effect is a shimmering tapestry of light. This lexicon of modern cuts made the earrings uniquely sculptural, an Art Deco marvel long before the era fully bloomed. When Dame Greville passed away in 1942, she bequeathed her entire jewelry collection — including these chandelier earrings — to Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. Her intention was not merely generosity but to ensure the jewels continued to sparkle within the heart of the nation’s sovereign family.  In November 1947, King George the sixth and Queen Elizabeth presented the earrings as a wedding gift to their daughter, Princess Elizabeth, on the occasion of her marriage to Prince Philip.
