There are three types of lubricants based on the base oil (70 to 80 volume % is base oil): Natural oils, Mineral Oils and Synthetic oils. Natural oils are animal fats and vegetable oils. These lubricants have been used for millenniums before the discovery of petroleum and the extraction of mineral lubricating oil in the 19th century. They worked fine in those days but since the industrial revolution in the 19th century, the use of natural oils has diminished. This is because they are less stable in high temperature and high pressure conditions of modern machines. They oxidize easily as the temperature rises. Mineral oil based lubricants are most used in the industry. They perform quite well when they are mixed with the right kind of additives. Synthetic oil based lubricating oils are better than mineral oil based because the synthetic oils are more stable in terms of their viscosity.
