A triphasic CT scan is a specialized computed tomography (CT) imaging technique used to evaluate organs, typically the liver, by capturing images during three distinct phases of contrast enhancement. This approach helps to detect and characterize lesions, particularly liver tumors or abnormalities. Phases of a Triphasic CT Scan: 1. Arterial Phase (15-25 seconds after contrast injection) Captures the blood flow through arteries. Highlights hypervascular lesions hepatocellular carcinoma, arterial phase hyperenhancing lesions. 2. Portal Venous Phase (50-60) seconds after contrast injection): Captures blood flow through the portal vein. Useful for detecting hypovascular lesions, such as metastases or abscesses. 3. Delayed Phase (3-7 minutes after contrast injection) Captures the later phases of contrast washout. Helps identify lesion characteristics like washout of contrast or fibrosis. Common Uses: Liver tumors: Differentiating between benign (e.g., hemangioma, focal nodular hyperplasia) and malignant lesions like hepatocellular carcinoma, metastases. Pancreatic lesions: Assessing tumor involvement and vascular encasement. Kidney lesions: Differentiating cystic and solid lesions. Adrenal gland tumors: Evaluating pheochromocytomas or metastases. Preparation: Fasting: Usually 4-6 hours before the scan. Serum creatinine. Contrast Injection: Requires intravenous (IV) contrast; patients with kidney issues or allergies should inform the radiologist.
