A remarkable and inspiring view of the Village from the air during the fall. Fall was a busy time for early 19th-century New Englanders. Farmers harvested corn, potatoes, and vegetables. Families worked to preserve the harvest by drying, pickling, sugaring, and other preservation techniques. Despite the lack of modern refrigeration, families had no problem keeping food refrigerated from late November to early April. If anything, the concern was keeping food warm enough so that it would not be ruined by freezing or freeze-thaw cycles in the root cellar. Fall is a busy time at Old Sturbridge Village too! Make the Village a daytrip destination this season. Come for a special event, such as Apple Days or Dig-In: Field to Table, or come any day to enjoy the fall weather and leaves while learning about how early New Englanders spent their autumns.
