The Current Topics in Heritage Science (CTinHS) lecture series is organized by an Editorial Board of emerging professionals within the HS Academy of E-RIHS (https://www.e-rihs.eu/). The speaker of the 5th lecture of the 3rd edition of the “Current Topics in Heritage Science” was Lucia Burgio, Senior Scientist at the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in London. She delivered a lecture titled "Analysis of Indigenous American Objects from the V&A Collection", focusing on the scientific and technical investigation of Indigenous American lacquerware. These objects, long under-recognized, are now receiving growing international attention, and the V&A is contributing to this recognition through a multidisciplinary research initiative that combines heritage science with curatorial, conservation, anthropological, and sociological perspectives. Lucia Burgio presented the latest findings from the V&A’s work, exploring the materials and techniques behind objects such as mopa mopa and barniz de Pasto, Mexican maque, and cumatê. She discussed the challenges of developing suitable, non-destructive analytical protocols for rare and complex materials, and shared insights into pigment and dye identification, as well as novel conservation strategies.
