In 1964 composer Ron Thomas studied with Karlheinz Stockhausen at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Ron was 22, Stockhausen was 34. It was one year before what Ron calls his "Jazz epiphany" in Champaign-Urbana Illinois. Ron graduated from the Manhattan School of Music in 1963, already familiar with the recordings then available of Karlheinz' work. Stockhausen's fame as a musician was at its peak . After 1970 Stockhausen the person began to eclipse Stockhausen the musician and Ron's writings (beginning with this short essay) aim to refocus attention on the music itself beginning with "Punkte" for Orchestra up to the final version of "Momente". Before he became a controversial quasi-religious cult figure he was simply a composer, and a major one at that. Stockhausen's contribution to music as a musician deserves a fresh look. Ron would like to attempt to do this. Stockhausen's methods were very much more intuitive then one would guess from his complex writings, his teaching, and his interview-conversations. More on this to come.
