This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. One out of three Spanish children are poor. The crisis of child poverty was serious back in 2008 and has only deepened during the Great Recession, showing the vulnerability of families and the inneficacy of public safety nets. The consequences might be felt for decades. Yet, this crisis is hidden behind a flawed set of data that fragments and impedes an informed public debate. Filling this gap will be necessary if we are to unfold the political energy and creativity needed to rescue a whole generation. Gonzalo Fanjul is a researcher and anti-poverty activist. He is co-founder of the investigative journalism project porCausa and lead policy analyst at the Institute of Global Health of Barcelona. Originally trained as an economist and specialist on international development, he completed his studies at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government. Between 1998 and 2011 he was Research Director and Senior Advisor in Oxfam Spain and Oxfam International, where he played a strategic role in its global campaigns. He has published a number of works on trade, hunger, migration, aid and health. Most recently, he’s been the lead author of UNICEF’s Report Card 12 on child poverty in rich countries. He is also the author and co-editor of the award-winning blog of El País 3.500 Millones. More information and publications: GonzaloFanjul.com, @GonzaloFanjul. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
