The seminar on "Language and Culture in a Changing Society:Research to Support Kerala’s School Education System' jointly organized by Vakkom Moulavi Foundation Trust (VMFT), the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), and the Centre for Development Studies (CDS) was held at CDS from 14-15 Jan 2025 Kerala is an increasingly multilingual and multicultural society, while the school education system is becoming segmented and unequal based on language of instruction and curriculum. School education policy and practice needs to adapt to foster equity and to promote learning and development for all children. The objective of the seminar was to promote informed discussion on these topics, and to develop a future research agenda. Eminent researchers from Jawaharlal Nehru University, University of Delhi, the English and Foreign Languages University, Oxford University, young researchers from Kerala as well as teachers and teacher trainers have presented conceptual models of multilingualism/ bilingualism and culture in education, findings from research and as well as discuss classroom realities in Kerala.
