Welcome to my channel! This is Andy from I love languages. Let's learn different languages/dialects together. Special Thanks to Lingue Picarte Langue Picarde / @languepicarde Binjour vozautes! J'm'appelle Andy. Ecmint qu'ti vos? Hello! My name is Andy. How are you? Let's talk about the Picard language. Picard is a Romance language belonging to the langue d'oïl group. It is spoken in northern France and in Belgium's Hainaut province, though fluent use has become rare among younger generations. As of 1998, only 700,000 speakers remained, most of whom were elderly. Also known as Chtimi or Rouchi, Picard is classified as "vulnerable" by UNESCO and suffers from a lack of official recognition in France, as well as a poor reputation as a vulgar or unpleasant "dialect." Due to its position as the northernmost Romance language, much of its vocabulary derives from Dutch, though its core lexicon remains overwhelmingly Latin. Picards—and Picard speakers in French Flanders—are often described as warm and hearty, in stark contrast to the region's harsh weather. Once one of the most industrialized areas in the world, Picardy is now a mix of rural landscapes and vibrant cities. Historically Catholic, the region was also the birthplace of Reformed theologian John Calvin. Other notable Picards include Robespierre, Macron, Dumas, and Racine. Although impoverished, the area boasts landmarks such as Amiens Cathedral—the largest in Europe—and numerous World War I battlefields. As a result, it remains one of France's most visited regions. This video is created for educational, language awareness, and language preservation purposes. It aims to provide valuable insights and knowledge to viewers, enhancing their understanding and appreciation of different languages and their unique characteristics. By raising awareness about linguistic diversity, the video seeks to foster a greater respect and recognition for various languages, particularly those that are endangered or underrepresented. Additionally, it contributes to the preservation of languages by documenting and sharing linguistic knowledge, thus ensuring that these languages and their cultural heritage are not lost to future generations.
