East of West is a violent sci-fi-western-apocolyptica graphic novel series written by Jonathan Hickman, illustrated by Nick Dragotta, and colored by Frank Martin. This was originally created for an Indigenous Re-presentation (Land and Literature) class, but I though some people here might find it interesting as well. This is meant to be an analysis of the work, not a subjective comment about its worth (so no worries about if you like it, I enjoyed many parts of the series). A Small Note on Terminology: Throughout this essay I will use a variety of terms, some of which the audience may be confused by or find offensive. When talking about real people or communities, I will always default to their own self-identified tribal nation affinity, however when speaking more broadly I will use the term "Indigenous Peoples" or "Indigenous Americans." Similarly, I only use the word "Indian" to refer to the long-standing caricature portrayed often by Western creators (never real people), or when Indigenous people/scholars use the term in a quote. University Land Acknowledgment: I acknowledge that the University sits upon land within the territories of the Ute, Cheyenne, and Arapaho peoples and that 48 contemporary tribal nations are historically tied to the lands that make up the state of Colorado.
