(7 Aug 1994) The US military chief, General John Shalikashvili, arrived in Rwanda's war-damaged capital, Kigali, on Sunday (7/8) to briefly salute 260 American troops on duty there and meet with the victorious rebels' commander. Shalikashvili, Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, spoke briefly with soldiers among the American contingent at Kigali airport before driving off to meet the UN military commander, Major-General Romeo Dallaire. He was also to meet Paul Kagame, the country's new vice-president and commander of the Rwanda Patriotic Front (RPF) guerrilla force which conquered the country last month. Shalikashvili restated that US policy in Rwanda was not to get involved in any peacekeeping operation alongside or within the United Nations Assistance Mission in Rwanda (UNAMIR). "We're here to assist with a humanitarian effort, not to be part of UNAMIR," he said. Meanwhile, 75 British troops arrived in Kigali as part of the planned 600-strong British force to provide medical, logistical and technical aid to the UN relief effort.
