Closure and Management of Oro-antral communications: Dr Stephen Mvala (WEB98)

Oro-antral communications (OAC) and fistulae (OAF) are complications frequently encountered during the extraction of maxillary molar teeth. The major reason is the anatomic proximity or projection of the roots within the maxillary sinus. Closure of these unnatural communications is very important in the prevention of sinus contamination by food or saliva accumulation which could lead to infection, impaired healing, and chronic sinusitis. This lecture will cover: • DEFINITION • ANATOMY • AETIOLOGY • SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS • MANAGEMENT • REFERENCES Dr Stephen Mvala obtained his Bachelor of Dental Sciences degree from the University of Witwatersrand in 2012. He then did his community service at the National District Hospital, in Bloemfontein in 2013. Between 2014 and 2017, he was permanently employed by the Free State Department of Health at Vrede Hospital. He later joined the Maxillofacial unit at Pelonomi Tertiary Hospital in 2018 where his interest in the discipline developed. In September of the same year, he started his journey as a registrar in the Maxillofacial and Oral Surgery department at the University of Witwatersrand. He is currently in his 3rd year of the registrarship and has completed Basic Surgical skills; ATLS and a Master class in Orthognathic Surgery.
