Another sterling creation by The Hoyt-Clagwell Company of Port St. Joe, FL, USA. This engine is made from a junked lawnmower engine of uncertain lineage. Etienne Lenoir, a Belgian, invented the first PRACTICAL internal combustion engine in 1860. It had favor for about eight years until the Otto-Langen engine was introduced. The Lenoir engine has no compression. Fuel and air is drawn into the cylinder during the first few degrees past top dead center. Ignition occurs and drives the piston down to a bit before BDC, at which time the exhaust valve opens, staying open until about TDC when the process repeats. In my version of the engine, I use poppet valves with the intake being atmospheric and the exhaust being driven by a crankshaft mounted cam. For this particular run, ignition occurs at approximately 10 degrees after TDC. The exhaust valve opens at 165 degrees after TDC and closes at 0 degrees, giving a duration of 195 degrees. It is to be noted that the original Lenoir design used a slide valve and was double-acting. Lenoir is also noted to be the first to use high-tension spark for ignition.
