Avascular necrosis of the talus is a condition that affects a small bone in your foot called the talus. Let me break it down for you: The talus bone is an important bone that connects your leg to your foot. It has a lot of blood vessels that bring oxygen and nutrients to keep it healthy. However, sometimes, these blood vessels can get damaged or blocked. Remember the talus is 60% articular cartilage with a very tenuous blood supply. There is very little periosteal attachments and no tendon attachments. When the blood vessels in the talus bone are damaged, it means that the bone doesn't get enough blood supply. Without enough blood, the bone cells don't get the oxygen and nutrients they need to stay healthy. As a result, the bone can start to die. I'll sometimes describe this as a very rapid for of arthritis that affects the cartilage and bone. Avascular necrosis means "death of bone tissue due to lack of blood supply." So, avascular necrosis of the talus means that the talus bone is dying because it's not getting enough blood. As a result the cartilage over the bone loses its structural support. This condition can cause pain, swelling, and difficulty in moving the foot. It can make it hard to walk or do activities that involve your foot. A lot of the symptoms are similar to arthritis. To treat avascular necrosis of the talus, doctors might suggest different things depending on how severe it is. They may recommend rest, using crutches, or even surgery in some cases. We use to think that these needed to be fixed immediately but over the last decade, that thought process has changed. Now we know the important thing is to reduce the joints and manage the open wounds. Timing of definitive fixation is less important. #orthopedics #footandankle #footandanklesurgery #medicaleducation #ankletrauma #talusfracture
