Atari Karts (Atari Jaguar Game) - Borregas Cup Longplay - Challenge: Beginner - Let's face it: the Mario Kart series set the bar so high that every kart game automatically gets compared to it. Its exceptional standard becomes the yardstick for the genre. It might sound biased, but it's only natural when you're faced with an attempt at imitation. Don't get me wrong, imitation isn't inherently bad, as long as the final product is enjoyable. Unfortunately, Atari Karts doesn't quite hit the mark. The requirement to progress through easier levels to reach the hardest isn't necessarily a flaw. While some prefer immediate access to the highest difficulty (as seen in Mario Kart releases), earning the right to compete at an elite level has its rationale. However, the real issue lies in the gameplay. Regardless of the character you choose, you're always the weakest driver in the pack. Whenever you collide with an opponent, they'll forcefully bounce you aside, continuing unscathed. I'm not asking for realism, just a bit of fairness. Losing a race at the last moment because an opponent deliberately knocks you off track isn't enjoyable. But the game's biggest flaw? No matter your efforts or knowledge of the tracks, your kart will inevitably get stuck due to ground irregularities or obstacles. If that happens, you're either fortunate to quickly regain control by countersteering, or you can bid farewell to the race and the cup itself (which consists of 6 races, btw), as it takes at least 15 seconds to free your kart. Needless to say, it's one of the most frustrating kart racing games I've ever played. Finally, while the soundtrack is decent, it doesn't quite complement this type of game. I expected more playful, dynamic tunes; instead, the tracks resemble those from an RPG, creating an odd atmosphere. #retrogamingloft #atarikartslongplay #atarijaguar
