College Futures envisions a California where postsecondary education advances racial, social, and economic access to opportunity, unlocking upward mobility now and for generations to come. The Unlocking Economic Mobility for Adult Learners Initiative represents a key investment toward achieving this goal. California is home to 6 million adults aged 25 to 64 with some college education, but no credential. Many of them, especially those who are low-income or from underserved communities, face a difficult road to economic mobility through postsecondary education. These learners are often working adults juggling multiple priorities — jobs, family responsibilities, and financial obligations — while navigating complex postsecondary learning environments not designed with their needs in mind. For many, education is not their only or most immediate priority. To accelerate this work, College Futures is launching a two-phase process to identify and elevate promising learner-centered innovations that support adult learners in attaining postsecondary credentials and achieving economic mobility. College Futures anticipates awarding up to $4 million in funding for up to 10 projects in 2026—learn more here.
