Claire's - Driving Test day

This is Claire's twenty second driving lesson with Bob (totaling about 25 hours of tuition so far). This is Claire's final lesson before her first driving test. Unfortunately, the test was not successful, a combination of the mock test experience (which only confussed her and made her believe she was missing something), negative stories about the test from people she knew and some of the highly judgemental comments on here about mirrors ect caused Claire to doubt herself. Once you get into the frame of mind of trying to second guess what you think the examiner wants rather than having trust in your own ability to drive safely (no matter what) the thoughts and emotions that follow such doubts really do interfere with your performance and therefore your chances of being successful. If you are confident that you can deal with anything you are going to meet on the test (or indeed in real life) because your know you have the skills. knowledge and understanding necessary - luck is simply not a factor nor is the examiner. The examiner can almost smell this uncertainty and therefore is much more likely to place more significances on any driving faults that occur. After all the examiners is only human and they want you to be safe on the road afterwards. Despite the doubts and the obvious nerves which must have weighed heavily on her Claire still nearly passed her driving test failing on only a couple of things. Things that she is normally very good at namely reverse parallel parking (control - putting the rear wheel onto the kerb) and dealing confidently with traffic at a mini roundabout (hestancy - unnecessarily giving way to traffic from the left). Evidence that perhaps Claire didn't have the level of control or confidence in herself to be allowed on the road at this stage. The examiner doesn't know you and can only make a decision on what her or she sees during the test - a small snap shot in time. It doesn't mean you are a bad driver nor if you pass a good driver it is just an observation of what happened - it is what it is. It is not a judgement of you or your real ability only of what they saw happen. So don't take it personally. Unlike traditional instruction LDC heavily promotes student centred learning rather than the instructor centred fault orientated learning approach offered by most other driving schools. This involves the student being encouraged to take more responsibility for their own development by using the LD System materials before and after each lesson and by using discovery learning with self determination and reflection; rather than being continually criticized and told what to do by the instructor. In particular talk through instruction, prompted practice and long winded lectures are avoided, if at all possible - instead encouraging the student to work it out for themselves.
