Open science for inclusive science | Vittorio Saggiomo | TEDxWageningenUniversity

What’s the point of having scientific and technological innovations when only less than one-third of the whole world can use them? Our societies are losing collective brainpower because many scientists in low and lower incoming countries do not have the possibility to do science. Thus: how can we make science more inclusive? These questions are always in the back of my mind when we perform research in our laboratories. This is why we have a strong focus on scientific accessibility of our developed methods, from microfabrication to sensors development. I discuss here how a biased research assessment is hindering open science, and how a better assessment would result in a better, more accessible, and more inclusive science. I also show two examples from our laboratory: microfluidic fabrication and the development of a cheap device for the detection of SARS-CoV2, and other diseases. Assistant professor, BioNanoTechnology group. Expert in Open Hardware, microfabrication, sensors, and devices development. Twitter @V_Saggiomo https://www.wur.nl/en/Research-Result... This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
