10/18/25 Started the NJ Fall Run earlier than usual this year. Normally, I wait until November but I decided to hit the surf mid-October this year. Glad I did as I landed one on the very first outing and found some unexpected creatures. A lucky start to the season. 00:00 I’ve always loved the Sunrise and the Sunset. But the Sunrise of my first outing for the NJ Fall Run 2025 made it that much special. As I cast into the surf, the light shifted gradually. 01:27 Hooked into something decent, felt solid, with good weight. It came off not long after, and I never got a clear read on it. No pull, no shake, just a steady resistance. 01:45 While walking the beach, I came across a fairly decent sized crab washed up in the surf still alive. Not sure what kind it was. Later on, I spotted a couple more. I tossed them back into the water, hoping they’d make it. 02:22 Found more creatures! This time a live clam! 02:41 Casting continues. The view was amazing! 03:16 Yet another creature! This time a live snail! 03:30 Sent both the clam and the snail back to where they belong. No need for them to die drying out on the sand under the sun. I like to believe that small act brought me a bit of luck shortly after. 04:02 Not long after sending the clam and snail back to the surf, I hooked up on my first 2025 NJ Fall Run Striper. Just shy of 28", a thick, healthy fish. Harvested it using the bonus tag. 05:42 The Striper flopped hard and slammed into the reel a few times, kicking up a decent amount of sand. This is exactly why I fish with a Van Staal. A quick rinse in the surf and I’m back in action. Some people ask why I spend that kind of money on a reel. For me, it’s simple! I don’t want to worry about sand, salt, or dunking the reel when I wade out to a sandbar where it's waist deep, getting hit by waves. Fewer distractions mean more focus on fishing and staying safe. 06:12 Running on almost no sleep, I was starting to feel it. None of the reports or buddies reported anyone catching anywhere so I decided to call it. 06:39 Getting back to the car and still have 2+ hours to drive back home.
