Today, November 6th, is the birthday of Cassie Rene Bernall. Cassie would be 42 but died at 17 in the Columbine shooting. She enjoyed taking nature photos and dreamed of attending medical school. Known for her long, beautiful, corn-silk blonde hair, Cassie was growing it out to donate for chemo patients through Locks of Love. In her early high school years, Cassie rebelled and got into some trouble with drugs and alcohol, but a year and a half before the Columbine massacre, she changed schools for a fresh start and returned to her roots. On the 20th anniversary of her death, her father described his reality: “I think of Cassie every single day. I don’t anticipate that pain ever leaving.” Cassie died in April of 1999 along with 12 others. The shooters also injured 21 more before taking their own lives. They acquired 3 of their 4 guns from private sellers at a gun show. Both just 17 at the time, the boys were turned away on their first attempt but returned with an 18-year-old female friend. Although she was clearly not the buyer and did not handle the guns or ask questions, her presence allowed the unethical sellers to put guns in the hands of two killers. #HonorWithAction #sensiblegunlaws
