Hengist and Horsa - Song in North Sea Germanic and Late Proto-Brythonic | The Skaldic Bard

Here’s another original song, this time about Hengist and Horsa, the legendary brothers who are thought to have led the invasion of Britain in the 5th century. Music, lyrics, and arrangement by The Skaldic Bard. This was a real labour of love to create. I’ve tried here to reconstruct a North Sea Germanic (otherwise called Ingvaeonic, within which are generally placed Old English, Old Frisian and Old Saxon) dialect as it could theoretically have been spoken at the time of the Anglo-Saxon invasion at this point in the 5th century. There are a few things that separate North Sea Germanic at this point in history from other Germanic dialects, such as: 1) the Nasal-Spirant law, 2) the blending of plural verb conjugations, 3) nasalisation and rounding of ‘a’ before nasal consonants. I have based the chronology of language change in English at this time on a few things, primarily the Pre-Old English runic evidence that we have at our disposal – showing, for example, that the Proto-Germanic diphthong /ai/ had not yet monophthongised to /ā/ – as well the earliest Old English texts that we have at our disposal, which show some early archaic features that helped me reconstruct some of the inflections used in this song. I assume that the following has taken place by 450 AD: 1) Nasalisation and rounding, 2) Uniform plural, 3) Ingvaeonic spirant law, 4) Fronting of long PGmc ā to æ. This order means that, crucially, this dialect of North Sea Germanic predates so-called Anglo-Frisian Brightening (where short ‘a’ in all positions was fronted to ‘æ’), vowel breaking, palatalisation, palatal diphthongisation, i-mutation, and r-metathesis. This leads to the forms used throughout this song, such as Hangist (which eventually evolved as Hængist (fronting) - Hengist (i-mutation) and Hrosō (Hros + weak masculine -ō - Hros + a (unrounding) - Horsa (r-metathesis). The Germanic portions are primarily written in alliterative verse as per pan-Germanic tradition. For the Brythonic, I consulted Old and Middle Welsh texts for examples on phrasing to try to ensure authentic wording. It goes without saying that all of the above is necessarily speculative, so I will just say this is merely my personal attempt based on the evidence. That said, I am quite confident with the result (after many, many weeks of reading). For the music itself, I find a lot of reimagined early Germanic stuff to be quite dark and mysterious, whereas I imagine them to be a little more jolly and triumphant, hence the slightly lighter tone in this one.
