Xochi is due for a trim so I used positive reinforcement to freshen up her manners for the farrier (currently me as barefoot trimmer). I am working on getting her comfortable propping her foot up for periods of time. I am also studying her hoof shape to figure out how I want to tackle her hooves. To do this I use positive reinforcement training using treats. If she were to have been very resistant or get any I would have asked her to move her body some as well. My bridge word is 'Good Girl' and the actual cue is 'Yes'. So, I may sound kind of annoying with how many times I tell her "Good Girl". Admittedly, I have not intermittently reinforced her taking the treat from the opposite side of my body in awhile. So, I should remember to do a session of that soon too. Her front right has been upright and it got to a point where I think it had a broken angle with her pastern. Her hind right seems to be stretched to the side too. Xochi is a 4 year old Devil's Garden mustang mare. I have spent time watching my mentor trim horse hooves and of course done some reading. I recently got the OK to work on a few other horses at the stables. They are mostly seniors so it still is hard work because they are not as comfortable holding their legs up. Which is probably why I get to work on them :) The cool part is that they have softer soles and frogs than my mustang so I can get a little more used to using hoof knives.
