Cox's Bazar is a town located in the southeastern part of Bangladesh. It is famous for having one of the world's longest natural sea beaches, stretching over 120 kilometers. The history of Cox's Bazar dates back to ancient times when it was part of the Kingdom of Arakan. The name Cox's Bazar is derived from Captain Hiram Cox, a British East India Company officer who was appointed as the Superintendent of Palongkee outpost after the First Anglo-Burmese War. He founded a bazaar (marketplace) here in the early 19th century to trade with the local people. During the British colonial period, Cox's Bazar was a popular tourist destination for the British officials and their families. In the early 20th century, the town was developed as a health resort, and several sanatoriums were built for the treatment of patients suffering from tuberculosis and other respiratory diseases. After the partition of India in 1947, Cox's Bazar became part of East Pakistan, which later became Bangladesh in 1971. During the Bangladesh Liberation War, Cox's Bazar was a strategic location for the Pakistani Army, and it was used as a transit point for arms and ammunition. In recent years, Cox's Bazar has become a major tourist destination, attracting both local and foreign tourists. The town's economy is mainly dependent on tourism, fishing, and agriculture. However, the influx of Rohingya refugees from neighboring Myanmar has created a significant humanitarian crisis and posed challenges for the local community.
